How we approach your case
CRS + HIPEC: the technique and how we apply it
The results of cytoreductive surgery with HIPEC depend to a large extent on the team's case volume and protocols.
CC-0 cytoreduction
The aim is to remove all visible macroscopic disease (complete cytoreduction, CC-0). The CC-0 rate is one of the factors that most determines the oncological outcome.
HIPEC in a single operation
Immediately after cytoreduction, the abdominal cavity is perfused with chemotherapy at 41-43°C for 30-60 minutes. The heat increases the effect of the drug on residual cells.
ERAS protocols + specialised ICU
The team applies enhanced recovery (ERAS) protocols and has an ICU experienced in the postoperative care of complex cancer surgery, which reduces morbidity and shortens the stay.
Decision by a multidisciplinary committee
Each case is presented to a committee of surgical oncologists, a medical oncologist, a radiologist and a pathologist. There are no unilateral decisions: the strategy is always agreed.

How the process works, step by step
The process has four steps and does not oblige you to have surgery with us.
1. You send your report
You fill in the form and the coordinator tells you exactly which documentation we need (CT, MRI, pathology, previous reports).
2. The committee reviews it in 48 h
Surgeons, a medical oncologist and a radiologist analyse your case in a multidisciplinary session. If more information is needed, we tell you straight away.
3. We call you with the proposal
The coordinator explains the committee's assessment: whether surgery is indicated, which technique, which hospital and the next practical step.
4. You decide with no obligation
The second opinion does not commit you to anything. If you decide to have surgery with us, we organise everything; if not, we give you the clinical information in writing so you can use it wherever you want.

I am a 63-year-old patient. They detected adrenal gland cancer and told me there was nothing to be done. I have peritoneal carcinomatosis. When I sent my diagnosis to every center, practically all of them agreed on palliative chemo with little survival time, since I had a very aggressive type of cell. Until we reached Dr. Quenet, Dr. Torrent and their team. I can only confirm what their CV announces: they are far ahead of the rest. They saved my life, because during the operation the harmful cells that everyone had diagnosed, and that were the reason nobody would operate on me, were not there. This intervention has become the best investment of my life.

The best decision of my life was finding this excellent team of surgeons who saved my husband's life. How long does it take to get a response to my second opinion?
The medical committee reviews the clinical documentation within 48 hours of it being complete. The coordinator then contacts you to explain the proposal and, if appropriate, book a consultation with the surgeon. If tests are missing to reach a decision, you are told exactly which ones before any appointment is made.
What documents should I send for the second opinion?
A recent contrast CT scan, PET-CT, pathology reports and your oncologist's latest report. If you have an abdominal MRI and blood tests with tumour markers, send those too. If anything is missing, send what you have: the team reviews the documentation and tells you which specific test is needed.
How long is the hospital stay after HIPEC at Teknon?
The average stay is 8 to 14 days, depending on the extent of the cytoreduction and postoperative progress. The first days may require an intensive care unit. The ERAS enhanced recovery protocols applied by the team, with early mobilisation and early nutrition, shorten that time.
Do you see patients from outside Barcelona or from abroad?
Yes. A large share of patients come from other provinces or other countries. The coordinator advises on travel, accommodation and paperwork, and groups the tests into a few days. The second opinion can be started entirely remotely, by sending your reports before you travel.
Do you work with insurers?
Yes. Centro Médico Teknon has agreements with the main private insurers in Spain. Cover for this type of surgery depends on each policy and on prior authorisation, so the coordinator reviews your case and explains what your insurance covers and what would fall outside it before you take any step.
When is HIPEC used and when is it not?
HIPEC is combined with CRS when the tumour origin and peritoneal spread are suitable. Not every carcinomatosis case is a candidate for HIPEC: the committee assesses the PCI, histology, general condition and response to previous treatments. In some cases only CRS is indicated, or PIPAC may be considered.
