A tailored strategy and a team of three surgeons
Eva was 56 and had no previous illness. She began to notice stomach discomfort and abdominal swelling that she described as a sensation of fluid rather than gas. After several consultations, a CT scan revealed something serious and the diagnosis was high-grade ovarian cancer with peritoneal metastases, that is, peritoneal carcinomatosis.
Among the options she had, Eva chose the one that gave her the most reassurance. With Dr. Juan José Torrent she felt safe, and one factor weighed heavily on her decision: knowing that the surgery would be performed by a team of three surgeons who made decisions together, not a single person. The team was very clear about the plan and explained it to her in detail and with a positive outlook.
Treatment followed a neoadjuvant strategy. First, a laparoscopy to assess the disease from the inside. In a second stage, the team decided, for the patient's safety, to give chemotherapy before surgery so that the operation would be less aggressive and more tolerable: three chemotherapy sessions, then surgery and three more sessions.
In her case the disease was very small but very widespread. The chemotherapy worked very well and the surgery was a success: the team removed all visible disease and then applied HIPEC, a bath of heated chemotherapy inside the abdomen to eliminate any residual cancer cells. Today Eva is well, with no noticeable sequelae.
"With Dr. Torrent I felt safe. It reassured me to know that the decision was made by three surgeons in agreement. I would recommend it 100%. I am here, I am alive." Eva, patient
Eva remembers the follow-up during her stay: the doctor visited her morning and afternoon, noted down her questions and answered them one by one. She felt, in her words, extremely well cared for. Her advice for anyone in a similar situation is not to think twice: to trust a professional team where you know you will be in good hands.
