Multimodal treatment of a rare abdominal tumour
This is the case of Laura, who was diagnosed with a recurrence of a rare abdominal tumour. These tumours are uncommon, and it is advisable to treat them in teams with experience in them.
Her treatment was planned by a multidisciplinary team. The therapeutic strategy consisted of complex cytoreductive oncological surgery with HIPEC, a procedure that seeks to remove all visible tumour lesions from the abdominal cavity.
During the same surgical procedure, HIPEC (hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy) was applied, which consists of administering heated chemotherapy directly into the abdominal cavity. The heat enhances the effect of the chemotherapy, which aims to eliminate microscopic cancer cells that may have remained after surgery.
Drs. François Quenet and Juan José Torrent performed the surgery. Afterwards, Laura received intravenous systemic chemotherapy as complementary treatment.
Almost 2 years after the intervention, Laura is completely disease-free and continues with her regular follow-up checks, which have been favourable so far.
"Today I can say I have a second chance at life thanks to this exceptional medical team." Laura, patient
After cytoreductive surgery, HIPEC and systemic chemotherapy, Laura has recovered her quality of life and remains disease-free.
