Recovery
What to expect after surgery, home care and how to get back to your normal life.
Recovery is a gradual process. Everyone has their own pace, but knowing what to expect will help you get through this period with more peace of mind. In this section you will find information about every phase of recovery. If your operation included a stoma, read what an ostomy is and how to care for it as well.

Keys to a Good Recovery
Move early
Walking from the first day possible prevents complications and speeds up recovery.
Proper nutrition
Eat small amounts often. Protein is essential for healing. More detail in nutrition in oncological surgery.
Pain Control
Tell us about your pain so we can adjust your medication. Well-controlled pain makes recovery easier.
Follow the Instructions
Take your medication, look after your wounds and attend all scheduled check-ups.
Warning Signs: When to Get in Touch
If you notice any of these signs, contact your medical team immediately.
Information for Family Members and Caregivers
Family support helps a great deal during recovery. As a family member or caregiver, you can help in many ways:
- Keeping the patient company during the first weeks at home
- Helping with household tasks that require physical effort
- Making sure medication is taken correctly
- Preparing nutritious, suitable meals
- Encouraging them to walk and move a little every day
- Watching out for warning signs
- Offering emotional support and patience
Look after yourself too. Caregiving can be exhausting. Ask for help if you need it.
