RelapseReappearance of the disease after a period of control. In peritoneal carcinomatosis it may be peritoneal, distant or mixed, and it does not always rule out further surgery.
It appears because, even after a CC-0 cytoreduction, microscopic tumour cells that no test detects and that HIPEC does not always reach may persist.
It is classified by location: exclusively peritoneal, distant or mixed. That distinction shapes the options, because a limited, peritoneal-only recurrence may be a candidate for a second cytoreductive surgery with HIPEC.
The disease-free interval is the other decisive factor: a short interval indicates aggressive biology and makes reoperation less favourable.
