What the symposium covers
Some people inherit a genetic alteration that greatly increases their risk of breast or ovarian cancer. Knowing this in time changes the options: it allows closer follow-up and, in some cases, considering surgery before a tumour appears. The session follows that path from the start, beginning with how hereditary risk is identified and what a genetic result means, moving on to the surgical options available and ending with how the decision is made.
The speakers are specialists in clinical genetics, gynaecology, breast surgery, plastic surgery and longevity. It closes with an open round table where patients, families and doctors can put their questions directly to the speakers.
Preventing ovarian cancer
There is no effective screening test for ovarian cancer in the general population, and its first symptoms are vague, so it is often diagnosed when the disease is already advanced. That is why preventive surgery plays an important role for women with a high hereditary risk: it involves removing the fallopian tubes and ovaries before cancer develops.
At 19:10, Dr. Juan José Torrent will explain when this surgery is indicated and when it is best considered. Dr. Torrent leads the gynaecological tumours unit at Quenet Torrent Institute, which specialises in advanced ovarian cancer. If you want to know which signs to watch for, we have a guide to ovarian cancer symptoms.
