Prof. Julio García-Aguilar
About Me
Prof. Julio García-Aguilar is one of the most influential colorectal surgeons worldwide in the treatment of rectal cancer and colon cancer, particularly in minimally invasive and robotic surgery, organ preservation and total neoadjuvant therapy (TNT).
He graduated in Medicine from the Complutense University of Madrid, completed additional general surgery training at Beth Israel Hospital and a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School, as well as a colorectal surgery fellowship at the University of Minnesota Medical Center. Since 2012 he has been Chief of the Colorectal Surgery Service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he holds the Benno C. Schmidt Chair in Surgical Oncology.
He has been a key figure in the studies that consolidated the modern concept of rectal preservation in patients with a complete clinical response after TNT, one of the most important transformations in rectal cancer treatment of the last decade. From 2026 he joins the Quénet Torrent Institute as Chief of the Colorectal Surgery Service.
