Second Medical Opinion for Patients and Families in Oncology

Why Seek a Second Opinion in Oncology?

A diagnosis of cancer, particularly for a complex or rare tumour, is one of the most challenging moments patients and families face. Seeking a second opinion from a specialised oncological surgery centre is not a sign of distrust — it is an informed, proactive step that can confirm the diagnosis, refine the treatment plan or reveal previously unconsidered options.

When Is a Second Opinion Most Valuable?

When the diagnosis involves a rare tumour (sarcoma, peritoneal carcinomatosis, GIST). When surgery has been deemed impossible or too risky. When multiple treatment options exist and their relative merits are unclear. When the first opinion is from a non-specialist in your specific tumour type. When prognosis has been described as poor and you want to explore all options. When treatment has failed and you are looking for alternatives.

How to Request a Second Opinion

Gather your records: Pathology reports and slides (original blocks are sometimes needed), imaging (CT, MRI, PET — on CD/USB), surgical reports, discharge summaries, oncologist letters. Contact the specialised centre: Many expert centres now offer remote review of cases. You may not need to travel in person for the initial consultation. Allow time: A proper second opinion review by an MDT takes 5–10 working days. Urgent cases can be expedited. Bring your questions: Is the diagnosis confirmed? Is surgery possible? What are the realistic outcomes? Are there clinical trials?

For Families

Family members play a crucial role in supporting patients through the second opinion process. Help gather records, accompany to consultations, take notes, and help evaluate the information received. A major cancer diagnosis affects the whole family — psychological support is important for everyone involved.
