The HIPEC technique (Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy) consists of combining, in the same surgical procedure, cytoreductive surgery (surgical removal of all the peritoneal surfaces affected by the tumour), with the administration of a dose of chemotherapy. This chemotherapy is heated to 41-42 degrees, as heat increases its effectiveness. 

Contrary to la intravenous chemotherapy which circulates through the organism, this technique allows application of the chemotherapy directly on the cancer cells, inside the abdomen. This practice makes it possible to obtain higher concentrations of the chemotherapy agent and destroy the microscopic cells that may have remained in the abdomen after performing surgery. Moreover, the heat in itself has an antitumor effect, as it increases the penetration of the medication inside the cells.

Currently, the HIPEC is aimed at treating five different types of peritoneal carcinomatosis, which are peritoneal pseudomyxoma, mesothelioma, carcinomatosis of gastric origin, ovarian cancer and cancer of the colon.

It should be noted that a significant number of patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis increase their survival rate and the progression of the disease slows.
